Roger Heaton

This year (2011) I'm recording the Schoenberg Clarinet Sonata (that's the arrangement for clarinet and piano of the Op. 26 Wind Quintet by Felix Greissle), the Op. 5 Berg pieces, and works by Krenek with pianist Charles Wiffen, and also a album of new clarinet quintets with the Kreutzer Quartet including a newly commissioned work by Mihailo Trandafilovski. Both of these discs are for Clarinet Classics.

Tom Johnson Rational Melodies and Bedtime Stories is available from Ants-Silenzio

Listen to Rational Melody no. 21

Roger Heaton is, in this disc, simply fantastic. It's hard to find a better word to describe the sensations that surface as we listen to him. The British clarinetist give us the essence of Johnson’s music. In his interpretation rationality becomes joy, inspiration, strength; melodies appear in chic classical clothes and his virtuosity (always needed by the score) perfectly adheres to the scores. And there is also the elegant reading of the texts of the Bedtime Stories, with that perfect English accent and that clarinet that seems coming from the pages of a fairy-tales (and numbers) book.

Available from Clarinet Classics direct here or as a download from iTunes

In an impressive feat of clarinet virtuosity, ROGER HEATON brings pop multi-track recording techniques to modern classical music in some of the most exciting new clarinet music of the past 15 years.

First recording of Three Elegies for Nine Clarinets, a major new work by GAVIN BRYARS (composer of "Jesus' Blood Never Failed Me Yet" and "The Sinking of the Titanic"). Written "as a gift of gratitude" for ROGER HEATON. All instruments - 4 Bb clarinets, 2 alto clarinets, 2 bass clarinets and 1 contra-bass clarinet - played by Heaton.

Important new recording of STEVE REICH's New York Counterpoint for 11 clarinets.

ENRICO MORRICONE's music to the enchanting film "Cinema Paradiso" in an arrangement for clarinets.

Six other works, including "Stone:Wind:Rain:Sun" for 2 clarinets by CHRISTOPHER FOX; Bass Clarinet and Percussion by MORTON FELDMAN; "Like He Never Was", a new work by GLYN PERRIN; 25 Karwa-Melodien for 2 clarinets by WALTER ZIMMERMAN and Rational Melody No.21 by TOM JOHNSON. "Three Elegies" is the music for a new dance work, "The Glass Blew In", toured by Siobhan Davies.

"Roger Heaton is undoubtedly an expert performer ….. This is a highly enjoyable disc."
